Boris Hagelin of Sweden developed a long line of cipher
systems, beginning with the B-21, B-211, C-35, C-36, C-38 (which later
became America's M-209). The C-38 was then produced with a keyboard and
motor in order to increase speed of operation. A keyboard version
of the C38 was produced and it was called the BC-38. A later, minor
update, resulted in the BC-543.
The machine is cased although the lid is not shown in the photo.
