TA-970/U and TA-980/U Red Phone

The TA-970/U and TA-980/U telephone sets are used primarily in shipboard installations of the Single Audio System (SAS), which provides voice communications both plain and cipher modes. They are an integral part of the ship's external communications system.

The TA-970/U red phone has no internal crypto capability. It's just a handset and speaker with some switches and indicators. It hooks up to the SA-2112/STQ Audio Switch (called the coke machine .   See  - http://www.navy-radio.com/ships/bb61/DSC02121.JPG   The "coke machine" connects the TA-970 and other sources with unencrypted or encrypted lines using external voice encryption equipment such as KY-58, KY-75, KY-8, etc.

The 980 telephone  system provides voice communications and control capability for up to 12 switch selectable channels from below deck (protected) shipboard spaces. The 970 itself is  a single channel unit only.
