In over a 100 years, we have come a long way - from spark gap transmitters to satellites which provide world wide, high speed communications. Gone, is the warm glow of a vacuum tube filament or the radiance of an incandescent pilot lamp. In their place, science and technology have provided integrated circuits and light emitting diodes respectively. Does all this communications wizardry make the world smaller ? Just ask the Captain standing on the bridge of his ship in the Persian Gulf or the Falkland Islands if he doesn't envy old Nelson who could put his telescope to his blind eye and say "I see no signal" and know that their Lordships in the Admiralty would not hear of it for weeks and his action would not be reported on network TV even as he spoke.
